X-Wars Original is back online

The 2007 browser client still runs. It is fragile, nostalgic, and useful as a reference while the resurrection takes shape.

It has been a while since the last post, but I wanted to share something fun: I went looking for an old X-Wars build to refresh my memory on balancing and mechanics for the new browser MMO. The code is ancient - I did not expect it to boot - yet it came back faster than it had any right to.

So I put it online for everyone, not just for my own archaeology.

  • X-Wars from around 2007 is running again.
  • English only - no other translations on this legacy instance.
  • Expect breakage. A lot of things no longer work the way anyone remembers.
  • Old cheat protections are disabled to keep the server maintainable - please do not exploit it.
  • Original documentation was lost in backups; archive.org still has the 2007 site.
  • Fleet interactions may not work. I could not easily disable noob protection - if you get ships and can attack someone, let me know.
  • The UI was built for smaller monitors. You may need browser zoom (or reading glasses).

Play it here: https://original.xwars.net/

Why bother?

Code older than twenty years still executing is wild. Running this instance helps in two ways:

  • See who still wants to play a deep browser space strategy MMO.
  • Show collaborators the old game when they have never seen X-Wars firsthand.

Footnote

This is a temporary nostalgia lane, not a maintained product. Bugs will stay bugs. Be kind to anyone exploring it while I keep working on the resurrection.
